What is Bespoke?
The word bespoke (/bəˈspoʊk/) goes all the way to the mid-1500s where it was actually used as a verb instead of the adjective definition more prevently known today.
Bespoke actually is derived from the verb bespeak meaning to speak for something; speak up; or speak out.
It wasn’t until 1607 that the Oxford English Dictionary shows the meaning of bespoke took a slight twist into the adjective form meaning “…anything commissioned to a particular specification (altered or tailored to the customs, tastes, or usage of an individual purchaser).” Initially it was used in reference to tailor made suits and shoes and was largely considered only to describe only those in the higher end market.
At some point after the 19th century, the word was used to describe all custom made goods. Today, the word bespoke now implies exclusivity, and is used as an aid in marketing and branding.
